Q&A with Ian

What ignited your interest in the construction industry?

I have an uncle who ran his own construction company in N Ireland and I enjoyed going out to site with him to review progress and measure up the completed works. We discussed possible careers within construction and with my penchant for numbers and measurement, it was agreed I would try being a quantity surveyor.

What’s kept you working in the construction industry?

The camaradarie of working alongside my colleagues, fellow consultants and the clients I have met over the last three decades. Seeing a completed project being used for its designed purpose is always a thrill.

What’s a good day at work?

Whilst I enjoy carrying out my office based duties including producing Bills of Quantites, Specifications, Empoyer’s Requirements, etc., a good day would be visiting site to review progress or to complete a monthly valuation. Seeing a building come together and discussing progress and any design issues with the main contractor’s site staff, operatives and sub-contractors is always rewarding.

What would be your alternative career?

Being the landlord of a successful public house serving a variety of quality real ales in a friendly and cosy environment.
